Friedrich Gorissen: B.C. Koekkoek 1803–1862. Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde, Düsseldorf 1962, cat.-no. 57/34 (with wrong image and partly wrong provenance details).
Viktoria Dagmar Litscher von Rochow née Baroness von Rochow came from a Prussian noble family from Brandenburg. Her ancestor, Friedrich Eberhard von Rochow (1734–1805), was an important educator at the time of the Enlightenment and was known for his philanthropic school reforms, which he introduced in an Enlightenment model school at the family castle in Reckhahn. Today the castle houses the only school museum in the state of Brandenburg (for further bibliographical information see: Hanno Schmitt and Frank Tosch (eds.): Vernunft fürs Volk - Friedrich Eberhard von Rochow im Aufbruch Preussens, Henschel Verlag, 2001).
Viktoria Dagmar studied art history and journalism at the Sorbonne in Paris. She married a Swiss entrepreneur and travelled the world with an open mind and a love of art. Some carefully assembled items from her family estate are now offered for sale.
In addition to furnishings (from the Geneva property) and high-quality miniature paintings from the periods of German Classicism and the French Empire, which are presented in the Decorative Arts auction catalogue, several landscape paintings by the Koekkoek family of artists stand out (lots 3220–3222). The Dutch dynasty of artists produced a number of talented marine and landscape painters over several generations, three of whom are represented in the Litscher von Rochow Collection with one work each. The late work by B. C. Koekkoek from 1857 offered here shows a romantic landscape in the evening light which is typical of the painter (lot 3220). The second landscape piece, by the marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek the Elder (1815–1882), is a rarity in this artist's oeuvre and was created in 1863, probably in memory of his brother B. C. Koekkoek, who died the previous year (lot 3222). The offer is rounded off by a landscape by Pieter Hendrik Koekkoek (1843–1927) from the third generation of the Koekkoek dynasty (lot 3221).
Our thanks to Christian Lucht, M.A., and to Dr Guido de Werd who have confirmed the authenticity of this work having examined it in the original.
