A PAIR OF DECORATIVE AIGUIÈRES IN GILT BRONZE MOUNTS
Provenance: According to historical sources, from the former Collection Bethsabée de Rothschild.
The bronze on offer is based on a model of a pair of ewers from the former Champalimaud Collection. The latter are dated around 1755. The orientation of the bronze dragons, the design of the scrolled handles and of the base match the pair on offer (Cf. Christie's, The Champalimaud Collection, 7 July 2005, Lot No. 135).
Extraordinary ewers, with elaborate bronze mounts. The dragon motif was very popular, especially at the beginning of the 18th century. A pair of ewers with similar mounts originally came from the Collection of the Duc d'Aumont. They were later purchased for King Louis XVI and are now part of the Louvre Collection. (Cf. Daniel Alcouffe; Anne Dion-Tenenbaum; Gérard Mabille, Gilt bronzes in the Louvre, Dijon, 2004, pp. 89/90, No. 40).
Another similar pair of bronze-mounted aiguières with crazed glazing and a relief-decorated dragon, but with a differently oriented bronze dragon, from the former Wrightsman Collection and dated 1820-40, were sold at Christie's New York (Cf. Christie's, The Private Collection of Jayne Wrightsman, 14 October 2020, Lot No. 47).
