After the Post-Impressionist Gustave Loiseau turned entirely to painting from 1887 onwards, he began his lifelong examination of the various phenomena of weather conditions and seasons. Completely in the tradition of Claude Monet, his treatment of the subject became a reflection of his own technique and sensitivity. The present work shows the famous Pont Neuf as a lively city scene on a rainy day. The suggested facades in the background reflect the visual challenges of the day's weather and lend dimensionality to the shimmering rain. In stark contrast, the clearly delineated outlines of the bridge separate the scene on the left from the river on the right. The combination of Post-Impressionistic technique, deliberate choice of colour and masterful use of perspective transform the scene into a fascinating and coherent whole.
