This dinner service is the epitome of an 18th century Rococo service, in a 20th century version. In 1764, it was the first official Court service at the Wittelsbach Electoral Court, painted by Joseph Zächenberger between 1761 and 1764 with festive bouquets of flowers, butterflies and insects.
At the end of the 18th century, it was replaced as Court service by the official "Bavarian Court Service". It experienced its renaissance in 1913, when the dinner service was again commissioned as a comprehensive dinner service for the wedding of Ernst August, Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg, son of the last Duke of Cumberland, to Viktoria Luise, daughter of the last German Emperor Wilhelm II. Under its contemporary name "Cumberland", it bears the "world's most elaborate floral decoration" which is still painted on porcelain nowadays; according to the Manufactory's notes, it takes a painter up to three weeks to paint a single plate.
