"The starting point is simply us." Hans Josephsohn
The human being is always at the centre of Hans Josephsohn's work. His expressive sculptures and wall reliefs appear archaic and monumental, while at the same time making us aware of the vulnerability and transience of human existence. Our eyes feel their way over patinated, porous brass surfaces and explore the relationship between form and feeling. It is a fascinating dialogue between the material and the immaterial. In a time of restlessness, we are asked to pause, to linger, to take notice, to confront our own existence. Each relief becomes a starting point for a journey through life and contains within itself a profound examination of the human body and its relationship to its surroundings. Individual, touching, interpersonal constellations and emotions modelled in plaster and clay, cast in brass, oscillating between triviality and intimacy. The relief becomes a mirror of one's own existence. In the attempt to surmise the faces of the figures, we lose ourselves in the nuances of the surfaces. The materiality testifies to a raw honesty that only life can draw or Josephson can model.
Born in Königsberg in 1920, Hans Josephson travelled to Florence to study art after leaving school. Due to the antisemitic politics of Italy and Germany, Josephson was forced to flee to Switzerland in 1938. In Zurich, he met the sculptor Otto Müller, who taught him how to sculpt. In 2003, Josephson received the Art Prize of the City of Zurich, and the Kesselhaus Josephsohn in St. Gallen opened with a permanent rotating exhibition of his works.
