PRODUCTION MADE MORLEY CIGARETTES FOR ‘THE X–FILES’

The X–Files', 1996
20th Century Fox, USA
8 × 5.5 × 2 cm

As one of the most prominent and certainly the most iconic brand of fictional cigarettes, Morley Cigarettes have been used in countless movies and TV shows. They made their first appearance in Alfred Hitchcock's ‘Psycho’, which made them popular, but vanished almost completely during the 1970s and 1980s.

They made their comeback in ‘The X-Files’, on the set where this pack of cigarettes was used. Not only did the main antagonist get his name, ‘the cigarette-smoking man’, by famously smoking Morley Cigarettes, in the episode titled ‘Brand X’ the show even gave the fictional brand its own villain story.

‘The X-Files’ is the reason that to this day, Morley is used as a cheeky little inside joke between the directors of shows like ‘Friends’ or ‘Breaking Bad’, and their most movie history savvy audience, which makes the prop presented here especially exciting and an important piece of movie history.
