Japan, 18th c. Height 34 cm.
Black lacquered wide wood case with golden metal fittings hosting the polychromly painted Happi Benzaiten, an eight-armed manifestation of the goddess of water, music and eloquence. The hinged doors are painted with the 15 attendants (dôshi). Signs of age and wear.

A LARGE ZUSHI (PORTABLE SHRINE) BEARING AMIDA BUDDHA.

Japan, 19th c. Height 36.5 cm.
Wood with black, gold and red lacquer, metal fittings and hair ornaments, the jewel crown is missing. Amida Nyorai sits in Amidajô-in mudra with the hair plaited in hôkei style. The iconography indicates an affiliation to the Tendai school, in particular to the jôgyôzanmai nenbutsu ritual, one of the most important shishû zanmai (Four Samadhi) rituals. Minor traces of age and wear.

Wood, lacquered in red and gold, the inside of the double doors polychromly painted, metal fittings. The interior is bearing Amida Buddha, the doors decorated with the Four Heavenly Kings (Shitennô) and the two attendant Bodhisattva of Amida Nyorai Seishi and Kannon. Minor damages.

TWO SMALL NICHIREN-SCHOOL WOOD FIGURES: KISHIMOJIN UND MUENZOKU.

Japan, 2nd half of Edo period, overall height 27 cm, figures 20 cm.
With polychrome paint, gold lacquer and metal ornaments. Kishimojin, the patron deity of children in a rare depiction as old woman with long hair, is also known as Kariteimo. The other figure is Muenzoku (Skr. Acalä), one of the Ten Rasetsunyo (former Hindu female demons) who accompany Kariteimo as scholars of the Lotus Sutra, recognisable by the sutra box. Traces of age.
