ASTRONOMICAL TABLE CLOCK, Renaissance, signed CHRISTOF PLEIG ULM (Christof Pleig, verifiable in Ulm 1575-1625), Ulm circa 1625. Finely painted iron with allegorical figures from geometry and astronomy, "memento mori", mythological figures, flower vases, putti, garlands, leaves and frieze, and engraved brass. Front with 3 finely engraved gilt brass dials. Verso - also designed to be visible- large, gilt brass dial with Roman hour and quarter hour numerals, Arab minute numerals, dates, zodiac signs, day and night lengths, and sunrise and sunset times. Iron movement with spindle escapement reworked to a pendulum escapement, and striking on 2 bells and 2 side pendulums. Restorations and alterations. 25x14x48 cm. Provenance: - From an important Swiss private collection. - Exhibition: on loan at the Ulmer Museum.
