BILL, MAX

* 22.12.1908 Winterthur, † 9.12.1994 Berlin

Max Bill first trained as a silversmith from 1924 at the School of Applied Arts in Zurich, before studying architecture at the Bauhaus in Dessau for two years from 1927.At that time Josef Albers, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, László Moholy-Nagy and Oskar Schlemmer were teaching at the Bauhaus — and these were formative and groundbreaking times for the young Max Bill. In 1929 Bill returned to Switzerland and settled in Zurich. He first worked as an architect and then became increasingly involved in painting, scupture and product design. Inspired by the thinking of the artist Theo van Doesburg, Bill formulated the principles of Concrete Art by applying mathematics and geometry in his work.

At the age of 25, he was accepted into the Paris artists' group "Abstraction Création". His membership enabled him to exhibit alongside icons such as Piet Mondrian, Jean Arp and Georges Vantongerloo. From the 1930s onwards, this artist from Winterthur became one of the most important spokesmen for the Zurich Concrete movement. In 1936, with his famous text "Concrete Design", he provided design practice with a theoretical foundation that was of the greatest importance for the development not only of Swiss post-war art, but especially the Zurich School of Concrete Art with Camille Graeser, Verena Loewensberg and Richard Paul Lohse, among others.From 1944 to 1945 Max Bill was appointed to teach form at the Zurich School of Applied Arts. In the same year, the journal Abstrakt Konkret was launched; Bill wrote monographs, catalogues and articles which were based on his Abstract Constructivist writings.

His largest building project followed in 1950, which was for the School of Design in Ulm, where he was also Rector and Head of the Department of Architecture and Product Design for five years from 1951. After planning and contributing to numerous exhibitions, Max Bill taught as Professor of Environmental Design at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg from 1967 to 1974. Bill was also a member of numerous artists' and architects' associations and an honorary member of various academies. In 1994 he received an honorary doctorate from the ETH Zurich. Max Bill died in Berlin in 1994.
