RICHTER, GERHARD
* 9.2.1932 Dresden
Gerhard Richter was born in Dresden in 1932. After graduating from secondary school, he began training as an advertising and set painter in 1948. His artistic interests were supported early on by his mother, and so in 1951, after his first application was rejected, he was accepted into the free painting class at the Dresden Art Academy. In 1955 he travelled through the Federal Republic of Germany for the first time and spent a few days in Paris. After successfully completing his diploma in mural painting, Richter became a graduate student in 1956 and moved into a studio at the art academy. In 1959, with the permission of the authorities, he travelled to documenta II, where he encountered the works of Abstract Expressionism for the first time. In 1961, on his way back from Moscow, Gerhard Richter took the opportunity to prepare his escape from the GDR. He and his wife fled from East to West Berlin on the S-Bahn. On the advice of friends, he applied to the renowned Düsseldorf Academy, where he first became a student of Macktetanz and later of Karl Otto Götz. More important than the academy and the teachers, of course, was his acquaintance with Blinky Palermo, Sigmar Polke and Konrad Lueg, who were all extremely involved in Richter's life.
After his first exhibition in West Germany in Fulda, he turned away from the Informel art of his teachers and began to create his first works based on photographs. After a trip to Paris with Lueg, he began his chronological catalogue raisonné and signed a two-year contract with Heiner Friedrich. In 1964 the artist had his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Schmela; numerous group exhibitions followed under the heading of "Capitalist Realism". In 1967 he accepted an appointment as visiting professor in Hamburg. In 1968 he painted his first landscapes, shadow - and cityscapes. In 1969 he was the only German to be invited to his first group exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York — "Nine Young Artists. Theodoran Awards". Also in this year, he started work on "Atlas". In 1970 he produced his first seascapes, clouds, and grey paintings. Appointed professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1971, Richter began a 23-year teaching career, during which he trained some of the next generation of artists. His graduate students included Katharina Grosse and Karin Kneffel. There were several more appointments as visiting professor. In 1972 his "48 Portraits" were shown in the German pavilion at the Venice Biennale. He produced his first "Vermalungen" ("Inpaintings"). In 1973 he had his first solo exhibition at the Reinhard Onnasch Gallery in New York. The first abstract paintings were created in 1976. When the picture hall of documenta 6 was redesigned at short notice, Gerhard Richter withdrew his works on the opening day, but then returned five years later.
Gerhard Richter is undoubtedly one of the most influential and important artists of our time. His works were and still are included in countless group and solo exhibitions. Numerous prizes pay tribute to his artistic importance: for example, he was awarded the Arnold Bode Prize in 1982, the Oskar Kokoschka Prize in 1985, the Kaiserring of Goslar in 1988, the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale in 1997, and many more. His works are to be found in the collections of the most important international museums. Moreover, some of his works, such as "Ema (Nude on a Staircase)" (1966), the series of "Candles" (from 1982) and "Uncle Rudi" (1965), have become icons of art history. Other works such as "Tante Marianne" (1965) or the cycle "18. Oktober 1977" (1988) are icons of German history and debate.
His impressive, comprehensive, and meticulously documented œuvre encompasses techniques ranging from painting to graphics, multiples, sculptures, video works and installations. His photorealistic motifs permeate his entire œuvre, while he explores the most diverse ways of representing abstract art. Richter's love of experimentation, creativity, and fearlessness in exploring new avenues seem to know no bounds, making his work unique.
