LICHTENSTEIN, ROY
* 27.10.1923 Manhattan, † 29.09.1997 New York
Roy Lichtenstein was born in Manhattan on 27 October 1923 to a Jewish family. The private school he initially attended did not offer art lessons, so he painted in his free time. In 1939 he attended courses at the Art Students League. Influenced by his teacher Reginald Marsh, he devoted himself to street scenes and models. In 1940 he enrolled at the School of Fine Arts at Ohio State University in New York, where he painted in the Expressionist style. Under pressure from his parents, he earned a teaching diploma. Between 1943 and 1945 Lichtenstein did his military service in Europe. After a short stay in Paris, he returned to the States and graduated in 1946. In addition to his teaching, he began a master's degree programme. After graduating and after losing his position as a lecturer, Lichtenstein moved with his first wife to Cleveland in 1951, where he worked as a technical draughtsman. His first solo exhibition was held at Thirty Gallery in 1959/60. In 1957 he was appointed assistant professor at New State University, Oswego.
In the mid-1950s he consciously sought out his own style, which until then had still been strongly influenced by Abstract Expressionism. His breakthrough came with the acquaintance of Allan Kaprow, who in turn introduced him to Claes Oldenburg, Jim Dine, John Cage and others. Everyday objects found their way into Roy Lichtenstein's work as motifs and then, after some experimentation, the comic strip and the speech bubble associated with it. Another stylistic device is the close-up. His artistic breakthrough came in 1961 with the painting ‘Look Mickey’; in the same year he presented his works to the renowned gallery owner Leo Castelli, who immediately accepted him into his gallery. Success was not long in coming, and by 1962 Lichtenstein was already able to make a living from his art. In addition to the comic strip, technical innovations such as the washing machine also become motifs, as he wanted to combine art and commerce and oppose the ‘aloofness’ of art... ‘Pop Art looks out into the world, it seems to accept its surroundings, which are not good or bad, but different – a different mental attitude.’ In the mid-1960s, abstractions began to appear more frequently, and in the 1970s, on the one hand he explored optical illusions, and on the other he played with icons of art history such as Claude Monet. Expressionism and Cubism then reappear in the motifs of the 1980s.
Roy Lichtenstein's works are unmistakable not only because of his motifs, but also because of his use of Ben-Day dots. He replaced areas of colour with uniform dots of colour. His colour palette is characterised by clear, strong and, at the same time, reduced colours. He experimented with paintings, collages, prints, sculptures and ceramics.
Roy Lichtenstein died in New York in 1997. His widow created the Lichtenstein Foundation, which included around 800 works, writings and his archive. Since 2018, the Foundation has been in the process of winding down; about half of the works are to go to the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the archive to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington.
Lichtenstein participated in the documenta in Kassel in 1968 and 1977. In 1995 he was awarded the Kyoto Prize, and in 1996 he became an honorary professor at George Washington University, in Washington D.C. Together with Andy Warhol, he is one of the defining figures of Pop Art.
