KIEFER, ANSELM
* 8.3.1945 Donaueschingen
Anselm Kiefer was born in Donaueschingen shortly before the end of the war in 1945. After studying law and Romance languages and literature, he devoted himself exclusively to painting. He first studied at the State University of Fine Arts in Freiburg im Breisgau with Peter Dreher, then at the Academy of Arts in Karlsruhe with Horst Antes and was involved in artistic exchanges with Joseph Beuys. From 1971 to 1992 he lived and worked in Buchen in the Odenwald. Anselm Kiefer's mostly large-format works are intended to have an overwhelming effect through their dimensions, their mode of representation and their haptic quality. With his performance "Occupations", which was documented photographically, Kiefer marked out the terrain where the presence of Fascism in Europe had been felt. Since then, the reappraisal of German history — from Germanic myths to coming to terms with the National Socialist dictatorship — occupied a central position in Kiefer's work. In 1993 he moved to France and has worked in his studios in Barjac (Gard) and in Paris ever since. After his move to France, Kiefer increasingly devoted himself to the connection between Jewish and Christian religion, the myths and mystical teachings of world cultures and the culture of memory. His break with Germany and long journeys around the world thus marked a profound change in his artistic work.
The recipient of numerous prizes and honours, Anselm Kiefer is today one of the world's most important contemporary artists. His works have been exhibited at major international art exhibitions - documenta 6, 7, and 8, the Venice Biennale (German Pavilion 1980) - and in many museums in Europe, Japan, and the USA, and form part of important public and private collections. In 2007, the Louvre, Paris, purchased one of his works.Works from our auctions
