HIRST, DAMIEN

* 7.6.1965 Bristol

Damien Hirst was born in Bristol on 7 June 1965 and grew up in Leeds. At the age of 16 he began making drawings in the anatomy department of Leeds Medical School. From 1986 to 1989 he studied at the renowned Goldsmiths College in London, which completely changed his understanding of the classical techniques of painting, drawing and sculpture. He began working on some of his most important series while still a student. The first examples of the ‘Medicine Cabinets’ date from his second year at the college. Using cabinets of various sizes, he assembled and presented a series of medicines, displaying them as if in a showcase. In 1988, together with other students from Goldsmiths College, he curated the exhibition ‘Freeze’ in an empty warehouse, which is considered the birth of the ‘Young British Artists’. The series of ‘Spot Paintings’ originated here, in which Hirst applied round, coloured spots to the wall of the warehouse. The spots crop up again and again in his work.

In 1991 he began working on his most spectacular series — ‘Natural History’. He placed animals — sharks, sheep, cows — in plain glass tanks filled with formaldehyde. Later he also dissected some of the animals. These were the works he presented at the ‘Sensation’ exhibition in 1997, which brought the Young British Artists to worldwide attention and at the same time triggered an outcry. The collector, art dealer and patron Charles Saatchi, from whose collection this exhibition was drawn, was one of the first and most important patrons of the Young British Artists. Another work that caused a sensation was Hirst’s ‘For the Love of God’ from 2007 — a platinum cast of a skull, set with 8601 diamonds. Love, death, religion, and consumer culture are the key themes in Hirst's work, though which he breaks entirely new ground and is almost always controversial.

In 2008, the day before the Lehman bankruptcy, Hirst brought to auction at Sotheby's 287 works of art directly from his studio, without the involvement of his galleries, White Cube and Larry Gagosian, in order to open up new avenues in the art market and, at the same time, to reach new buyers. The 2-day auction fetched the sum of $200.7 million, which was a record for an auction exclusively dedicated to a single artist.In 1995, he was awarded the renowned Turner Prize. In 2002, he took part in the 50th Venice Biennale, and, in 2012, the Tate Modern organised a comprehensive retrospective of his work. Damien Hirst lives and works in Devon.
