DORAZIO, PIERO

* 29.6.1927 Rome, † 17.5.2005 Perugia

Piero Dorazio's work can be classified as both colour field painting and lyrical abstraction. Regarded as a pioneer of abstraction in Italy, he was one of the most important artists of the second half of the 20th century. Dorazio was born in Rome in 1927, where he attended grammar school until 1943. In 1943 his family fled to Abruzzo, their native province. After the end of the war, he worked briefly as a translator for the British army. Later he studied architecture in Rome.Influenced by Futurists such as Gino Severini and Giacomo Balla, Dorazio was drawn to painting shortly afterwards. On account of his aversion to the political right, he, together with Renato Guttuso, Giulio Turcato and others, joined a group of left-wing artists. The result of this collaboration was the creation of an abstract artists’ group called Forma I. In the same year, Dorazio won a prize and a scholarship from the French Government to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

Dorazio's close collaboration with fellow artists can be seen in his involvement in various new undertakings: in 1950 he opened the bookshop and gallery L'Age d'Or, dedicated to abstract art; in 1952, together with Alberto Burri, he promoted the Origin Foundation and edited the magazine Arti Visive. In 1953 he travelled to the USA for the first time to take part in the international summer seminar at Harvard. In the same year he moved to New York for a year, where his first solo exhibition was held at the One-Wall Gallery. This one-year stay was marked by newly formed acquaintances with Marc Rothko, Robert Motherwell, and Barnett Newman. The writings of Kandinsky and his thoughts on the immaterial aspects of painting also had a lasting effect on Dorazio's work. Dorazio remained constant in his use of materials and colours over time. He is best known for paintings with thick luminous bands of colour and hatched grids. While his paintings were abstract, Dorazio recognised the need for detail and complexity.

In 1959, Dorazio took part in Documenta II in Kassel and was subsequently invited to teach at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design, where he held classes every semester until 1969 and founded the Institute of Contemporary Art in 1963. In 1974, Dorazio moved back to his homeland; he spent the years until his death in 2005 in Perugia, Umbria.Dorazio's works are exhibited for example at MoMA, the British Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
