BASELITZ, GEORG

* 23.1.1938 Deutschbaselitz

Georg Baselitz was born on 23 January 1938 as Hans-Georg Kern in Deutschbaselitz. Baselitz began studying painting in 1956 at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Berlin-Weissensee with Herbert Behrens-Hangeler and Walter Womacka. After being expelled from the academy after two semesters, he continued his studies at the West Berlin Academy of Fine Arts with Hann Trier, where he explored the theories of Kandinsky, Nay and Malevich. This was followed in 1963 with exhibitions in Berlin (Werner & Katz Gallery), which sparked a deliberately staged scandal ("Die grosse Nacht im Eimer" and "Der nackte Mann"). From the 1960s onwards, Baselitz has made his mark on modern painting with sometimes obscene depictions and has caused a stir amongst the public.

In 1965 Baselitz was awarded a scholarship to study at the Villa Romana in Florence; the group of works entitled "Heroes" was created – within a year he produced 60 paintings, 130 drawings and 38 prints, characterised by coarse painting techniques and powerful colours. The subject – usually a lonely figure in a barren landscape, wounded and exposed – can be traced to Baselitz's own background, growing up somewhere between Communism and consumerism (East versus West).

In the mid-1960s he began to divide his pictorial motifs into strips and reassemble them, whereby the "fracture pictures" were created. During this period, he painted "Der Wald auf dem Kopf" (1969) his first work with an inverted motif. From then on, all the artist's works were produced in this way in order to make them non-representational and abstract.

Created in this way, without content, Baselitz's pictures cannot be interpreted, only observed. The artist counts Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Joseph Beuys and the Expressionist painters of Die Brücke amongst his role models.

Baselitz has lived in Salzburg since 2013. His works are exhibited in numerous museums in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria (Kupferstichkabinett Dresden, Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, Staatliche Graphische Sammlung Munich, Kunstmuseum Basel, Kunsthaus Zürich, Albertina Vienna, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam).
