Balkenhol, Stephan

* 10.2.1957 Fritzlar

Stephan Balkenhol was born on 10 February 1957 in Fritzlar, Hesse, the fourth son of a secondary school teacher and a housewife. During his studies from 1976 to 1982 at the Hochschule für Bildende Kunst in Hamburg, Stephan Balkenhol was decisively influenced by Ulrich Rückriem. After graduating, he was awarded a Karl Schmidt Rottluff scholarship and, in 1986, a working scholarship from the Hanseatic City of Hamburg, which paved the way for a successful career as a sculptor. Already by 1987 Balkenhol had received international recognition. In 1989, the artist was awarded the International Prize of the State of Baden-Württemberg, and one year later the Bremen Art Prize.

While working as a sculptor, Stephan Balkenhol also took on teaching assignments at the colleges of fine arts in Hamburg and Frankfurt am Main (Städelschule) from 1988 to 1992, as well as at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, where he has been a professor since 1992.

His often roughly worked and striking figures of men and women, now and then also a giraffe or a lion, which Stephan Balkenhol hews with an axe from mighty blocks of wood or makes out of bronze and paints in colour, are free of pathos, pain, suffering, joy and desire and have brought him great recognition worldwide. The seemingly inconspicuous and unmistakable sculptures and reliefs tell nothing, reveal nothing of themselves, remain strangely absent, elusive, enigmatic and fictitious. They are ordinary and yet unique. By generally depriving the figures of a psychologising dimension, Balkenhol's figures are also a mirror, reflecting the feelings, desires and hopes of the viewer. Instead of depicting historical personalities, heroes or great thinkers, Balkenhol focuses on the average, the banal, the normal, and the anonymous and places his works in urban public spaces, such as in Berlin, Chicago, Johannesburg, Kortrijk, London, Paris and Salzburg. In addition to his three-dimensional sculptures and two-dimensional relief panels, Stephan Balkenhol also creates drawings, lithographs, woodcuts and screen prints.

Stephan Balkenhol lives and works in Karlsruhe, Berlin and in the French municipality of Meisenthal.
