AUBERTIN, BERNARD

* 29.7.1934 Fontenay-aux-Roses, † 31.8.2015 Reutlingen

The French artist Bernard Aubertin, born in Fontenay-aux Roses in 1934, was an important member of the ZERO group.

He studied painting from 1955 to 1957 at the École des Metiers d'Arts in Paris, where he lived before moving to Brest in 1975. In 1985, he returned to Paris, which he finally left in 1991 when he moved to Reutlingen in Baden-Württemberg where he remained until his death on 31 August 2015. He donated his archive to the Foundation for Concrete Art in Reutlingen.

As a student of painting, he focussed on still lifes, landscapes and portraits and was still fully committed to figurative art. It was not until he met Yves Klein in 1957 that Aubertin's artistic approach took a decisive turn. He began to explore the possibilities of working in monochrome and used a wide variety of tools such as spoons, knives and forks to work the impasto surface. His preference for the colour red quickly became apparent, and with it his lifelong passion for light and colour spaces. For the French artist, red was a symbol of fire, and this colour was used repeatedly in his work.

Aubertin's artistic development is informed by his series of works. In 1957/58, he concentrated on the so-called Structural Paintings. In 1960, he created his first Nail Paintings, which he worked on in four different phases until 1971. At the same time, from 1961 to 1968, he worked on his Fire Pictures and Objects. In 1969 he created the first Avalanche Objects. In 1975, iron wire was added as an artistic element. In 1986, he created his first Fire Drawings and, two years later, his experiments with towels led to his Pargaing series.

Bernard Aubertin continued to produce a comprehensive and varied oeuvre well into old age, which received great public recognition through countless exhibitions, including his participation in documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977.
