FAUTRIER, JEAN

* 16.5.1898 Paris, † 21.7.1964 Châtenay-Malabry

Born in France in 1898, Jean Fautrier moved to England in 1907 after the early death of his father. He attended the Royal Academy at the young age of 14 and later the Slade School of Art, until he was called up for military service in 1917. As a result of a poison gas attack, he was to suffer from lung disease for the rest of his life; he was discharged from the army and went to recuperate in the Tyrol in 1920/21. At this time, he created his first expressive portraits and landscapes, while simultaneously experimenting with compositions in which the motifs seem to disappear amid the monochrome colouring and rapid paint strokes. Until the end of the 1920s, Fautrier participated in numerous exhibitions and was signed by Galerie Guillaume in Paris, until, from 1930 onwards he gradually withdrew from art and finally left Paris in 1934. Before returning to occupied Paris in 1940, he worked as a ski instructor and hotelier. Fautrier joined the Resistance, was arrested and, after his release, found refuge in Dr Lesavoureux's sanatorium, where he created his ‘Otages’ series, which marked his breakthrough as an artist. Up to 1954, his financial situation was difficult, which meant that his artistic work was continually interrupted. At this time, he worked for the Gallimard publishing house and developed the so-called ‘Originaux Multiples’. After 1954, his situation improved, and he began to paint in oil again. Five years later, he was one of the participants in documenta II and in 1960, together with Hans Hartung, was awarded the Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale and two years later the Grand Prize at the Tokyo Biennale. Stricken by serious illness, Jean Fautrier died in 1964.
