BURRI, ALBERTO

* 12.3.1915 Città di Castello , † 13.2.1995 Nice City

The Italian painter, collage artist and draughtsman Alberto Burri was born on 12 March 1915 in Città di Castello. After completing his medical studies, he was deployed as a military doctor in North Africa during the Second World War, when he became a prisoner of war and out of boredom began to paint in a representational style as a self-taught artist. At the end of the war, he gave up his medical career and devoted himself entirely to his passion — painting. The harrowing experiences of war were to leave their mark on his work for the rest of his life. After an early figurative phase, he soon began to create abstract, expressive works using everyday materials such as burlap, tar, iron, plastic and wood. Burri's unconventional choice of materials and innovative approach to art soon brought him international recognition.

Together with Mario Ballocco, Giuseppe Capogrossi and Epttore Colla, he founded the short-lived ‘Gruppo Origine’ at the beginning of the 1950s, which sought a return to simple forms and colours in abstract art. As early as 1953, Burri's first solo exhibitions were being held in renowned galleries and museums in the USA. Burri participated seven times in the Venice Biennale and three times in the documenta in Kassel. In 2015, in honour of Burri’s 100th birthday, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York presented a comprehensive retrospective. Alberto Burri died in Nice on 13 February 1995.
