BRAQUE, GEORGES

Georges Braque was born in Argenteuil on 13 May 1882. In 1899, he began his apprenticeship as a decorator and at the same time took evening classes in painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre. From 1902 to 1904, he continued his studies at the Académie Humbert in Paris. In 1905, at the ‘Salon d'Automne’, the works of Henri Matisse and André Derain made such an impression on him that he integrated the Fauvist style with its bright colours into his own painting. A close collaborative relationship developed from his meeting with Pablo Picasso in 1907. The two artists engaged in an intensive exploration of Fauvism, the inspiring landscape paintings of Paul Cézanne and their own art forms. Together, they developed the revolutionary art movement of Cubism.

With the outbreak of the First World War, Braque and Picasso parted ways. Braque was called up for military service in 1914. After a serious head injury and a long convalescence, he returned to Paris in 1917, where, apart from a few occasions, he spent the rest of his life. Braque increasingly moved away from Cubism and painted more still lifes with figurative elements. From 1929, he took up landscape painting again, employing new, vibrant colours in his works. After the Second World War his works bore distinct traces of seriousness and sobriety. From 1947 onwards, his state of health resulted in him becoming gradually less active. Georges Braque, painter, print maker and sculptor, died in Paris on 31 August 1963 and left no direct descendants. Braque is one of the most important artists within Modernism. His remarkable works are exhibited in major museums worldwide.
