BACON, FRANCIS

* 28.10.1909 Dublin, † 9.4.1992 Madrid

Francis Bacon was one of the most important English painters of the 20th century. He was born on 28 October 1909 in Dublin, Ireland. He began painting as a self-taught artist at the end of the 1920s, but only achieved his first great success with the triptych ‘Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion’, created in 1944. In his early oil paintings, he explored Surrealism and Cubism.

In the 1950s, he developed his own unmistakable style and created expressive, provocative portraits and nudes with a bleak prevailing atmosphere. Bacon's works are distinguished by their bold colours and haunting depictions, which often express pain, distortion, mutilation and passion. From 1951 to 1965, he created the successful series of Pope paintings based on a motif of Pope Innocent X. Together with Lucian Freud and Ben Nicholson, he designed the British Pavilion at the 27th Venice Biennale in 1954. A year later, his first retrospective was held in London. Francis Bacon received numerous prizes and awards. His works are to be found in renowned museums and private collections worldwide. Francis Bacon died of a heart attack in Madrid on 9 April 1992.
