WESSELMANN, TOM

* 23.2.1931 Cincinnati, † 17.12.2004 New York City

Tom Wesselmann was an American Pop artist who became famous for his female nudes. He first studied psychology at the University of Cincinnati, graduating in 1954. After graduating, Wesselmann remained in education - he began training at the Cincinnati Art Academy and also saw some early successes when he sold his first cartoon strips to the magazines "1000 Jokes and True". From 1956 he continued his studies at the Cooper Union in New York and graduated in 1959. A visit to MoMA and a Motherwell painting exhibited there inspired and prompted his first aesthetic experience. Shortly afterwards, together with Jim Dine and Marcus Ratliff, he founded the Judson Gallery in Greenwich Village, which became a meeting place for the avant-garde.

His career, as well as his first solo exhibition at the Tanager Gallery, began in 1961 with the series "Great American Nude". Inspired by the visual language of American advertisements, the series is characterised by the use of matt but powerful colours. Typical of Wesselmann's series are the sexually provocative female nudes, including the large-format "Great American Nudes".Like Jim Dine, Wesselmann set himself apart from Pop Art. His works reveal his experimentation with different materials and, by bringing together everyday objects such as taps or soap dishes, the creation of sculptural collages.From 1983 Wesselmann began creating nudes and still lifes in metal by transferring his drawings onto metal plates and cutting them out with a laser beam. In addition to these collages, he further developed Robert Rauschenberg's assemblage technique.Wesselmann continued to live and work in New York until his death on 17 December 2004.
