VLAMINCK, MAURICE DE

* 4.4.1876 Paris, † 11.10.1958 Rueil-la-Gadelière

Maurice de Vlaminck was born in Paris on 4 April 1876, the son of musicians. Due to an illness, he had to give up his profession as a racing cyclist and earn his living as a violinist. A chance encounter with André Derain in 1900 awakened Vlaminck's artistic ambitions, and the two friends shared a studio in Chatou. From then onwards, Vlaminck devoted himself to painting and writing and, as a self-taught artist, rejected any form of academic training. His landscapes and still lifes, which he painted using dynamic brushwork and glowing colours, are without doubt reminiscent of the works of the Dutch master Vincent van Gogh, whom he admired above all others.

Through the mediation of Henri Matisse, he joined the Fauvists in 1905. In the same year, a joint art exhibition with André Derain, Henri Matisse, Rouault, Dufy and Pablo Picasso took place at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. In 1906, Vlaminck presented his first solo exhibition. The acquisition of Vlaminck's entire oeuvre by the art dealer Ambroise Vollard demonstrated that his art was attracting a great deal of interest. Just one year later, he was able to secure an exclusive contract with the renowned gallery owner Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler. Inspired by Paul Cézanne's works and influenced by Cubism, for a time Vlaminck endeavoured to create balanced and well-constructed compositions. In 1919 with his post-impressionist works at Galerie Eugène Druet, Vlaminck achieved his breakthrough as an established artist. In the same year, he bought a house in Valmondois and moved to Rueil-la-Gadelière in 1925. The rural surroundings allowed him to fully develop as a landscape painter, writer and printmaker.

As he grew older, Vlaminck used increasingly dark, sombre colours and arranged the forms in a summary manner. In 1937, numerous works by Vlaminck were confiscated by the National Socialists and branded as degenerate art. The last years of his life were marked by his friendship with the Swiss doctor Dr Sigmund Pollag, who collected Vlaminck's graphic works and donated them to the Kunstmuseum Bern in 1970. Maurice de Vlaminck died in Rueil-la-Gadelière on 11 October 1958. He is known throughout the world as one of the founders of Fauvism.
