VASARELY, VICTOR

* 9.4.1906 Pécs, † 15.3.1997 Paris

Victor Vasarely (born Gyözö Vásárhelyi) was born in Pécs, Hungary, on 9 April 1906. Initially he studied medicine in Budapest. Before he even graduated, Vasarely switched to the private art academy in Budapest and then continued his artistic training at the renowned ‘Mühely’ school, which was modelled on the ideas of the Bauhaus and led by the Hungarian painter and graphic artist Sándor Bortnyk. Alongside his studies, Victor Vasarely earned his living by designing advertising posters.

When he moved to Paris in 1930, his work was characterised by his first tentative forays into geometric abstraction. In his newly adopted country, the artist initially worked successfully as a graphic designer. Vasarely soon took up an important challenge and brilliantly brought vibrations, rotations, and oscillations to the canvas. Vasarely mastered the use of optical illusions like no other artist. In 1944, before the end of the Second World War, he was able to exhibit his first works at the Denise René Gallery in Paris, which showed figurative works alongside his characteristic abstract forms. The success of this exhibition strengthened his resolve to earn his living as a painter.

From 1947, Vasarely developed an independent form of geometric abstraction, the variations of which led to optical patterns with kinetic effects. In 1955, on the occasion of the group exhibition "Le Mouvement", he published his ideas on kinetic art in the "Yellow Manifesto". From 1955 to 1968, his works were shown four times at the documenta in Kassel. In the 1960s he received several prizes and awards, including the Guggenheim Prize in New York. In 1972, Vasarely designed the famous rhombus with a 3D effect for the French car manufacturer Renault. In the same year, he designed the official logo for the Munich Olympics. In 1976, he established the Fondation Vasarely in Aix-en-Provence, which helped to set up an institute for contemporary design and architecture in 1981. In 1976, the first Vasarely Museum opened in Vasarely's birthplace, Pécs, with a second museum in Zichy Castle in Budapest opening in 1987.

Victor Vasarely died in Paris on 15 March 1997.
