Am 3. Oktober 1865 wird Gustave Loiseau in Paris geboren. Nach einer Dekorationslehre schreibt er sich 1887 für ein Malereistudium an der École des Art Décoratifs ein. Aufgrund eines Streits mit seinem Lehrer verlässt er ein Jahr später die Schule und lässt sich vom Landschaftsmaler Fernand Quignon unterrichten. Da ihn die reine Ateliermalerei von Quignon nicht überzeugt, zieht er 1890 nach Pont-Aven, wo er sich mit Paul Gauguin, Émile Bernard, Maxime Maufra und weiteren Künstlern anfreundet. In der Bretagne kann Loiseau wunschkonform in der freien Natur malen und somit die lebendigen Lichtstimmungen einfangen und in seine Werke einfliessen lassen. Loiseaus Experimente mit dem Pointillismus führen zu einer besonders eigenständigen postimpressionistischen Ausprägung. Die von ihm entwickelte singuläre Strichtechnik, die als "touche croisée" oder "en treillis" bezeichnet wird, verleiht Loiseaus Werken eine idyllische und weiche Qualität. Der typische Farbauftrag mit der charakteristischen Gitterstruktur wird zu Gustave Loiseaus Markenzeichen. Seine frühen Ausstellungserfolge, unter anderem 1893 im Salon des Indépendants sowie die Unterstützung durch Paul Durand-Ruel, dem renommiertesten Pariser Kunsthändler, ermöglichen dem Maler kontinuierliche und inspirierende Reisen. Die Wintermonate verbringt Loiseau meistens in Paris und in der Region Île-de-France, die wärmere Jahreszeit in der Bretagne, Normandie und der Dordogne. 

 Am 10. Oktober 1935 stirbt Gustave Loiseau in Paris. Der Künstler zählt zu den bedeutendsten französischen Post-Impressionisten, dessen Landschaftsdarstellungen und Pariser Stadtszenen auf seine Betrachtenden eine grosse Faszination ausüben. Seine Bilder leben von den atmosphärischen Darstellungen der Natur.
