GORBATOFF, KONSTANTIN IVANOVICH
Stavropol 1876–1945 Berlin
Throughout his life, this Russian Neo-Impressionist and professor at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art was fascinated by Italy. He first visited the southern landscapes in 1912 while on a scholarship in Rome and Capri. In the wake of the Russian Revolution, Gorbatoff decided to emigrate to Italy in 1922. He first settled in Capri before moving to Berlin in 1926, where he remained and worked as an artist until the end of his life. As a Russian émigré, he joined the intellectual circle around the painters Leonid Pasternak (1862–1945) and Ivan Myasoedov (1881–1953). There were numerous study trips, during which he continued to educate himself and found his own distinctive style, which also took him to England and to distant places such as Syria and Palestine.
His reputation as a gifted and talented artist spread quickly and even beyond the country's borders. After the Nazis took power in 1933, however, the demand for his art diminished and his family was gradually reduced to poverty. As a Soviet citizen, he was no longer allowed to leave the country after the outbreak of the Second World War, and so he died in 1945 shortly after the Soviet conquest of Berlin.
