DUFY, JEAN

* 12.3.1888 Le Havre, † 12.5.1964 Boussay

Jean Dufy was born in 1888, the seventh of eleven children. He was the younger brother of the painter Raoul Dufy. An exhibition of works by Matisse, Derain, Marquet and Picasso held in Le Havre in 1906 inspired Jean Dufy to become a painter. He settled in Paris after his military service (1910-1912) and met Derain, Braque, Picasso and Apollinaire. We immediately recognise the influence of his brother Raoul, one year his senior, whose works were characterised by the hatching technique borrowed from Cézanne.

After working with Raoul for a short time in the painting studio of the famous Lyon textile company Bianchini-Férier, Jean created decorative elements (floral and animal motifs) for the porcelain company Théodore Haviland in Limoges for more than thirty years from 1916 and became increasingly well-known both as a decorative painter and colourist, and as a painter. In 1920, Jean Dufy settled in Montmartre and had Braque as a neighbour. He was inspired by the theme of music, which was expressed in numerous paintings where he depicted pianists or orchestras and in which he created analogies between tonal and painted harmonies. Circus and clown pictures were also among his most important motifs. At the Exposition Internationale in 1937, the General Director of the C.P.D.E. (Compagnie Parisienne de Distribution de l'Electricité) commissioned his brother Raoul to decorate the Pavillon de l'Electricité. Jean helped him to execute a huge 600 m² fresco in recognition of the achievements of electricity, which can be admired today in the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris. In his later years (1950-1960), he travelled extensively in Europe and North Africa. His great love remained the city of Paris, however. Like his contemporaries Utrillo, Chagall and Marquet, Jean Dufy created many views of the city on the Seine and its numerous sights in a constantly evolving creative process and in his typical, open style. Jean Dufy died in Boussay in 1964.
