WITTMER, JOHANN MICHAEL
Murnau 1802 – 1880 Munich
Johann Michael Wittmer, one of the 'Deutschrömer' (German artists living and working in Rome), was born in 1802 to a family of painters from Murnau. After training at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under Peter von Cornelius (1783–1867) and being encouraged by King Ludwig I (1786–1868), he moved to Rome, where he lived and worked until the end of his life. Inspired by the work of his father-in-law, Joseph Anton Koch (1768–1839), his preferred motifs included religious and mythological scenes as well as scenes from Dante's 'Divine Comedy', already familiar from the work of Carl Gustav Carus (1798–1869), which he produced in the style of the Nazarenes.
