As a pupil of the two Hague landscape and animal painters Pieter Gerardus van Os (1776–1839) and Cornelis Steffelaar (1797–1861), Wouter Verschuur is one of the best-known exponents of Dutch Romanticism. His characteristic depictions of animals, especially horses, clearly show his artistic skill in capturing the different breeds of horses and the distinctive colours of their coats. The Dutchman's talent was recognised early on and his works met with lively interest. As early as 1833 he was accepted as a member of the Amsterdam "Akademie voor Beeldende Kunsten". His excellent reputation and appreciation of his skills extended beyond his native country, as witnessed by the numerous works that can still be found in international museum collections today.
