UHDE, FRITZ VON
Wolkenburg 1848–1911 Munich
Fritz von Uhde was born in Wolkenburg in 1848. After a rather disappointing start at the Dresden Academy, Uhde broke off his studies in 1867 and entered the guards regiment. His acquaintance with Hans Makart (1840–1884) in Vienna gave Uhde renewed hope, and so he ended his military service in 1876 in order to devote himself entirely to painting. Yet here, too, he was initially faced with new hurdles after being rejected as a student by both Carl Theodor von Piloty (1826–1886) and Wilhelm von Diez (1839–1907). However, none other than Mihály von Munkácsy (1844–1900) then accepted Uhde into his Paris studio in 1879. After his return to Munich in 1880, he met Max Liebermann (1847–1935), with whom he was to maintain a friendly relationship and, through the constant artistic exchange, he arrived at a naturalistic style with impressionist features. Together with Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth (1858–1925) and Max Slevogt (1868–1932) Uhde is considered the most important exponent of German Impressionism.
