THOMA, HANS
Bernau 1839–1924 Karlsruhe
For decades, Hans Thoma influenced German landscape painting with his naturalistic depictions and everyday rural motifs. Although at first his paintings were firmly rejected, he achieved his breakthrough in 1890 with an exhibition in Munich.
Born in 1839 in Bernau as the son of a woodworker, Thoma was related on his mother's side to the portraitist Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805–1873). At the age of 20 Thoma attended the art school in Karlsruhe, to which he would later return as a professor. Study visits to Switzerland, France, Germany, and Italy were to have a lasting influence on his style. The works of his French artist colleague Gustave Courbet (1819–1877) had a particularly strong influence on Thoma's oeuvre.
For the German art historian Henry Thode (1857–1920), Thoma's works, with their richly contrasting colours and distinctive style when depicting the flora, mountain landscapes and peasant architecture, represented an embodiment of the national identity.
