SCHENDEL, PETRUS VAN
Terheijden 1806–1870 Brussels
Petrus van Schendel is regarded as a typical exponent of Romantic genre painting, in which the eye is deliberately drawn to light effects using chiaroscuro. After 1828, when Schendel finished his training at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts, he worked extremely hard to earn his living as an artist. In the same year, he also discovered his personal specialisation, focusing on scenes by candlelight, lamplight and moonlight.
