NEHER, MICHAEL
1798 Munich1876
The Munich-born painter Michael Neher received his initial training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1813 under Matthias Klotz (1748–1821) and Angelo I. Quaglio (1784–1815). From 1819 he went to Italy in search of artistic inspiration, like many of his contemporaries. In Rome he was trained as an architectural painter by Heinrich Maria von Hess (1798–1863). During this time, he produced an extensive repertoire of numerous sketches of southern landscapes and scenes of everyday life, which were to serve as a source of inspiration for his oil paintings even after his return to Munich in 1825. In 1834, Neher was appointed by the Bavarian Crown Prince to work on the fresco decoration of Hohenschwangau Palace, which was a collaborative project with artists such as Lorenz Quaglio (1730–1804) and Albrecht Adam (1786–1862).
Michael Neher's great skill is to be found in his detailed and sympathetic approach to everyday scenes from Bavarian, Swabian, and Bohemian towns. He succeeded in taking the classic veduta and turning it into a consciously atmospheric and highly accurate portrait of towns and of architecture, enlivened with carefully arranged staffage figures.
