MUSIN, FRANÇOIS ÉTIENNE

Oostende 1820–1888 Brüssel

Very little information has come down to us about François Étienne Musin's youth. He studied at the drawing school in Oostende and was encouraged by the painter François Bossuet (1798–1889). In 1836 he enrolled as a pupil at the Brussels Academy and joined Bossuet's studio. In 1840 he made his debut in marine painting with an exhibition at the Antwerp Salon. Around 1853 the Prince of Prussia ordered a series of six paintings for his palace in Potsdam. At this time, Musin travelled frequently to Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, and Norway. From these travels he brought back numerous sketches and studies, which even today still can be found at auctions. In 1860 he settled in his newly built house in St Joost. He had a large studio set up in the garden, where his son also received painting lessons. Father and son were inundated with commissions: the Americans and the British were enthusiastic buyers.
He catered to the romantic taste of the time, which he conveyed through the depiction of storms, shipwrecks, sea battles and harbour views. Musin was highly regarded within conservative art circles in Brussels and elsewhere. He exhibited successfully in Vienna, Amsterdam, and London. He was very active during his career and produced an impressive number of paintings. From 1840 to 1888 he participated in numerous exhibitions in Europe and America.
