DUNOUY, ALEXANDRE HYACINTHE
PARIS 1757–1841 JOUY-EN-JOSAS
Born in Paris, Alexandre Hyacinthe Dunouy was one of the most esteemed lesser-known masters of late 18th- and early 19th-century France. He specialised mainly in views of the region around Paris, the Auvergne, the Savoy region, and the area around Lyon.
In 1791 he exhibited his work at the Salon for the first time, attracting the interest of numerous art lovers. Under the patronage of the Napoleonic general Joachim Murat, Dunouy travelled to Italy in 1810, where he captured numerous views of Rome and Naples.
His mostly small-format and decorative paintings, filled with the spirit of the late 18th century, are characterised by precise details and a bright and luminous colour palette.
