DORÉ, GUSTAVE
Strassburg 1832–1883 Paris
Gustave Doré was one of the most important French landscape painters of the second half of the 19th century. Influenced by the Swiss landscape painter Alexandre Calame (1810–1864), he went on numerous study trips, for example to the French coast, the Pyrenees, the Tyrol, Switzerland, and Scotland. As an autodidact, he alternated between subjects, techniques, and genres. Nevertheless, he prioritised landscape painting. His particular preference was for night and twilight scenes, in which he skilfully captured the range of natural phenomena and mystical atmosphere of such settings. Doré's treatment of light became an unmistakable artistic trademark of this Strasbourg-born artist. Some of these poetic compositions are among the most impressive landscapes of the mid-century and, with their harmonious compositional structure, are reminiscent of the painted plays of nature by Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840).
