CHARLEMONT, EDUARD

1842 Vienna 1906

Eduard Charlemont was born into a well-known Viennese family of artists in 1848. Son of the Viennese miniature painter Matthias Adolf Charlemont (1820–1871) and brother of the landscape painter Hugo Charlemont (1850–1939) and sculptor Theodor Charlemont (1859-1938), his artistic talent was nurtured from an early age, and he had already made a name for himself by the age of 15 as a drawing teacher at one of Vienna's secondary schools for girls. He studied at the Vienna Academy under Eduard Egerths (1818–1897) before being called to work in the studio of Hans Makart (1840–1884), an artistic luminary of the Vienna Ringstrasse epoch, from 1870.

Drawing on Hans Makart's 'Neo-Baroque' style, which was inspired by 16th-century Venetian painting and the lightness of 18th-century French Rococo painters, Eduard Charlemont developed a new and intrinsically independent style. His penchant for idyllic, playful compositions governed by a cool elegance is a constant feature in the artist's oeuvre as a whole.
