BOSSUET,FRANÇOIS ANTOINE
Ypern 1798–1889 Saint-Josse-ten-Noode
The Belgian artist François-Antoine Bossuet achieved fame as a gifted painter of vedute, who devoted himself especially to Spanish and Italian townscapes. He trained at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen under Willem Jacob Herreyns (1743–1827) and undertook numerous study trips to Italy, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Germany and the Netherlands, where he was inspired by everyday street scenes. In 1855 he was appointed professor at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles. He was particularly appreciated for his sense of authentic lighting and perspective, on which he also wrote scientific papers. He combined his love of architecture with well-observed scenes of market traders, washerwomen or strolling noblemen.e.
