BELMONT, LOUISE JOSEPHINE SARAZIN DE
1790 Versailles 1871
Born in Versailles, Louise Josephine Sarazin de Belmont was from a young age regarded as a gifted artist with an independent spirit who was able to shape her career entirely according to her own wishes. Under Pierre Henri Valenciennes (1750–1819) she was introduced to the art of landscape painting, to which she remained committed throughout her life. Her works met with widespread interest, especially on the French art market.
Belmont, who had no patron, financed her numerous study trips and her upkeep by selling her paintings at auctions. She travelled from Naples to Rome, on to Sicily, until finally reaching the Pyrenees in France.
Early works by Sarazin de Belmont often show a stronger connection to history than her later works. This inclination can be attributed to the academic instruction under Valenciennes, who continually exposed his students to the Paysage Historique.
