AGASSE, JACQUES-LAURENT
* 24.3.1767 Genf, † 27.12.1849 London
The Swiss animal and landscape painter Jacques-Laurent Agasse was born in Geneva in 1767. After his initial training at the Geneva School of Drawing (École de dessin d'après nature), he moved to Paris, where he was introduced to the art of history painting at the studio of Jacques-Louis David (1748–1825). Around 1800, he increasingly devoted himself to the English style of painting, especially in the depiction of animals. With the outbreak of the French Revolution, Agasse was forced to return to Geneva, where, together with his artist friends Wolfgang-Adam Töpffer (1766–1847) and Firmin Massot (1766–1849), he turned his attention to plein air painting and formed his own independent style, which bears witness to an extremely precise power of observation and a sense of romantic nobility. Towards the end of the 18th century, he succeeded in establishing himself as an animal painter in London and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy until shortly before his death in 1849.
