ABELS, THEODORUS JACOBUS
Amsterdam 1803–1866 Abcoude
Jacob Abels was born in Amsterdam in 1803 and attended boarding school in Hilversum, where he was introduced to drawing by Jan van Ravenswaay (1789–1869) and Pieter Gerardus van Os (1776–1839). His winter and summer landscapes, which were characteristic of Abel's early work, were complemented with animal staffages by P. G. van Os. In the works from his later period, he focused increasingly on river landscapes in the moonlight, which in certain respects are reminiscent of his 17th-century predecessor, Aert van der Neer (1603–1677). Abels died at the age of 63 in Abcoude, where he spent the last years of his life.
