RUISDAEL, JACOB ISAACKSZ. VAN

(around 1628/29 Haarlem 1682)

Jacob Isaaksz. van Ruisdael was the only son of the landscape painter and frame maker Isaack van Ruisdael, under whom he probably also received his training. He was also the nephew of Salomon van Ruysdael and the cousin of Jacob Salomonsz. van Ruysdael. His first paintings date from 1646 when he was just 17. Although he was initially influenced by the painting style of his uncle and his contemporaries in Haarlem, Ruisdael soon found his own style. His paintings are characterised by dramatic accents through the use of contrasting light, powerful pictorial motifs, and the sophisticated depiction of natural forms. His close observations of nature in the forest and dune landscapes around Haarlem are reflected in the drawings which have survived, and which, as direct studies, served as the basis for the painted versions carried out in the studio. In 1648 he joined the painters' guild in his home town. Around 1650 he travelled with his friend from Haarlem, Nicolaes Berchem (1620–1683), to Bentheim, a town with a castle which subsequently featured in more than 30 of his landscapes. In the 1650s and even more so in the 1660s, he was strongly influenced by the waterfall motifs that Allart van Everdingen (1621–1675) had brought back from Norway and used in his dramatic, often vertical-format landscapes. Ruisdael's work was reproduced and disseminated in copper engravings; some sheets were engraved by Ruisdael himself, which may have contributed to the posthumous fame of the painter whose motifs and compositions exerted a unique influence on landscape painting until the end of the 19th century.
