GUARDI, FRANCESCO

The Venetian painter Francesco Guardi was born into a family of artists and achieved fame through his paintings of vedute. Guardi's first works date back to 1735 and were produced during his training in the studio of Michele Marieschi (1710–1744). He worked together with his brother Gian Antonio (1699–1760) in the family studio and created works of a predominantly religious nature. After his brother's death, Francesco Guardi gradually turned away from these themes and devoted himself to vedute.
Influenced by great masters of the veduta genre such as Canaletto (1721–1780), Guardi developed his own style, which focused less on detailed depictions and instead used selective brushstrokes to create a freer and thus more atmospheric effect. His late period features his most expressive works, and includes views of the lagoon and the Capriccios.
