GALIZIA, FEDE
1578 Milan 1630
Galizia was trained by her father, the miniature painter Nunzio Galizia (1539–1621) in Milan and already by the age of twelve her work was commented upon. The art critic Gian Paolo Lomazzo (1538–1592) reported that Fede studied and imitated the great masters of her time. While female artists of her time rarely received commissions for history paintings, during her lifetime Galizia was known primarily for devotional paintings and portraits. Whereas most 17th-century painters specialised in a single genre, Galizia seems to have defied the obstacles of a male-dominated art world and produced a diverse body of work. While her still lifes were virtually unknown until the 20th century, it now appears that Fede Galizia, like Clara Peeters (c. 1589–1657) in the Netherlands, was to play a crucial role in the emergence of the relatively new genre of still life.
