BABUREN, DIRCK VAN
1595 Utrecht 1624
Dirck van Baburen was one of Caravaggio's (1571–1610) followers and is known as one of the Utrecht Caravaggists. After studying painting in Utrecht, he travelled to Rome in 1612, where his style was strongly influenced by the work of the Italian painter Caravaggio. Returning to Utrecht in 1620, Baburen shared his studio with Hendrick ter Brugghen (1622–1623) and, together with Honthorst and Ter Brugghen, established Utrecht's reputation as a stronghold of the Caravaggio style.
