AST, BALTHASAR VAN DER
Middelburg circa 1593–1657 Delft
Balthasar van der Ast was the pupil and brother-in-law of Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder (1573–1621), who is credited with having introduced the Flemish tradition of still life painting to Dutch art after his arrival in Middelburg around 1585. In 1619, van der Ast was admitted as a master to the Guild of St. Luke in Utrecht, where he settled until 1632, when he moved to Delft, where he remained until the end of his life. Especially during his Delft period, van der Ast expanded his pictorial repertoire to include a diverse selection of objects, including shells and exotic fruits.
