STELA OF PADMAPANI of black stone. Seated in lalitasana on a lotus plinth, hair piled up in loops, bearing a large lotus flower (padma) which is blossoming next to his left shoulder. The delicate polished face features curved eyes and eyebrows as well as a finely-modelled mouth. On the plint, a small figure of a devotee. Inscription in the aureole. East India, early Pala Dynasty, around 8th/9th century. H 47 cm.
