GONZALES COQUES
(1614 Antwerp 1684)
Allegory of taste.
Oil on panel.
27.8 × 21.5 cm.
Provenance:
- House of Art St. Lucas, The Hague.
- Collection of Mr. J. van Duijsendijk, Scheveningen, 1962.
- Swiss private collection.
Exhibited:
Delft 1963, 15th Old Art and Antiques Fair, 20.6.-13.7.1963, Museum Het Prinsenhof, Delft.
Literature:
Marion Lisken-Pruss: Gonzales Coques (1614–1684). Der kleine van Dyck, Turnhout 2013, p. 282, no. U20.
The painting was probably part of a series of the seven deadly sins, of which the Allegory of Wrath is still known (see Lisken-Pruss 2013, no. 47, p. 253).
Dr Marion Lisken-Pruss, who published the painting in 2013 as an uncertain attribution on the basis of a poor image, has now confirmed its authenticity after examining a photograph, for which we thank her.
