Merce Cunningham (1919-2009) was one of America's most influential dancers and choreographers. In collaboration with his partner, the musician John Cage, he created ground-breaking dance performances in which there were no restrictions on movement. In New York, where he lived from the early 1940s onwards, he cultivated close contacts with the avant-garde; many of his stage designs were created by Robert Rauschenberg, for instance, and he also found his way into Andy Warhol's work.
