A KILIJ WITH A MUGHAL HILT.

Ottoman Empire, late 18th/early 19th c. Length (blade) 76.2 cm, length (total) 94 cm.
With blade of characteristic Kilij type decorated with a panel of gold scrollwork on both sides at the base of the forward section, one side with a series of three rectangular calligraphic cartouches damascened at the forte, the other side with text damascened in gold and extending over the full length of the fuller, with a further small calligraphic cartouche damascened to its rear, and with traces of an earlier chiselled cartouche towards the base. With near-white hardstone hilt of Moghul Khanjar form carved with lotus flowers and leaves in low relief. Fitted with iron crosspiece damascened with panels of gold conventional flowers and foliage. In its original wooden scabbard with restored fabric, with large iron mounts profusely damascened with gold decorative panels carrying a series of cartouches each filled with texts, these in matching continuation of those on the crosspiece and the blade.
